Rheumatologists are doctors of internal medicine focused on immunological disorders that cause arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, scleroderma and a series of allied conditions. Arthritis Northwest’s rheumatologists have earned the respect of their peers and patients locally and nationally.



Howard M. Kenney, M.D.

Dr. Howard M. Kenney is an Arthritis Northwest founding partner who has held numerous leadership positions with Inland Northwest medical and arthritis related organizations. He holds an undergraduate degree in zoology from the University of Utah where he also earned his M.D. Dr. Kenney completed multiple training and residency fellowships through UCLA at the Kern Medical Center program in Bakersfield, Calif.

Dr. Kenney is an associate clinical professor of medicine at the University of Washington and has won multiple academic awards during his career. He is affiliated with Sacred Heart Medical Center and Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane. He has been licensed to practice medicine in Washington since 1983.




Jeffery B. Butler, M.D.

Dr. Jeff Butler joined Arthritis Northwest as a staff rheumatologist in 2001 after holding a similar position in the Spokane area for 10 years. Dr. Butler is board certified in internal medicine and rheumatology as well as by the International Society of Clinical Densitometry. Prior to joining Arthritis Northwest, Dr. Butler taught medicine and rheumatology at Oregon Health Sciences University before going into private practice.

Dr. Butler earned his M.D. at Tufts University School of Medicine, completed residency at Hospitals of the University Health Center of Pittsburgh and was a Fellow of Rheumatology at the Oregon Health Sciences University. He is also extensively involved in clinical research as a principal investigator.




Gary L. Craig, M.D.

Dr. Gary L. Craig joined Arthritis Northwest in 2005 following 24 years of private and university practice in Spokane and Toronto. Dr. Craig is also an assistant clinical professor of medicine at the University of Washington and a past clinical associate professor and director of the Rheumatology Training Program at McMaster University. He is a member of many professional associations including the American College of Rheumatology, American Society of Clinical Rheumatology, Northwest Rheumatism Association and the American College of Physicians.

Dr. Craig earned his M.D. at McMaster University where he also completed residencies in Internal Medicine and Rheumatology. He is actively involved in clinical research and has authored or co-authored many articles on arthritis and its related conditions.




Sean P. LaSalle, M.D.

Dr. Sean P. LaSalle joined Arthritis Northwest in 2007, returning to Spokane after completing his education and training. Dr. LaSalle spent the past six years at the Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, Ore., serving as an internal medicine resident, chief resident and fellow in rheumatology.

Dr. LaSalle, a Ferris High School graduate, earned his medical degree at the Tulane School of Medicine in New Orleans. He will focus exclusively on rheumatology at Arthritis Northwest.




Eric C. Mueller , M.D.

Dr. Eric C. Mueller joined Arthritis Northwest in 2008, returning to Spokane after completing his education and training. Dr. Mueller spent the past six years at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona, serving as an internal medicine resident, chief resident and fellow in rheumatology.

Dr. Mueller, a Lewis & Clark High School graduate, earned his medical degree at the University of Washington. He will focus exclusively on rheumatology at Arthritis Northwest.




Jon T. Stevenson, M.D. (ret.)

Dr. Stevenson was a founding member of Arthritis Northwest, together with Dr. Kenney. He received both his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Washington, and is a well-respected member of the Spokane medical community. Dr. Stevenson has since retired, and his patients are being cared for by the other rheumatologists at Arthritis Northwest.
