ANW providers, employees jingle for a cure

December 18, 2009

Given the opportunity, you can always count on the good people of Spokane to get out their Santa hats and jingle bells and start running for a good cause. This year, over 1,400 people could be found jingling along the Centennial Trail in support of the Arthritis Foundation. Among them were the providers, employees, family members and patients of Arthritis Northwest.

“The Jingle Bell Run was an exciting, healthy way to enjoy a beautiful November morning with family, friends, and neighbors,” said Dr. Eric Mueller. “The Inland Northwest really showed its support for arthritis sufferers. I hope the Jingle Bell Run continues its growth and popularity, as it is truly an inspirational event!”

Arthritis Northwest has sponsored the annual Jingle Bell Run ever since it was re-instituted in Spokane in 2007, working together with employees and community members to raise awareness and funds to combat arthritis. In addition to sponsoring the event, ANW was one of the top team fundraisers this year, bringing together 33 jinglers and nearly $1,000 to support arthritis education and research.

"The annual Jingle Bell Run met us with chilly weather this year, but warm enthusiasm. We had a great turn out for the event," said ANW Nurse Practitioner Diana Scherer.

There are an estimated 46 million Americans currently living with arthritis, making it one of the nation’s most common causes of disability. Put a little closer to home, there are 90,000 people in Spokane with arthritis. Many of them are patients at Arthritis Northwest.

Not only did the event serve a great purpose, it was also fun! The 5K was the main event, but there were plenty of activities for non-runners as well. Kids started off the morning with a 1K, teams competed for the best costumes, and even the pets showed up in support of the cause. After all, dogs can suffer from arthritis as well!

Overall, the event raised $45,000, with proceeds going to benefit the Arthritis Foundation. This organization was founded in 1948 and serves as the leading health organization addressing the needs of Americans with arthritis. Its mission is the prevention, control and cure of arthritis and related diseases. For more information about the Arthritis Foundation, visit their website at www.arthritis.org
